Yoshio Iwanami, Grand Master

The Ministry of Education has decided to include Budo (Kendo, Judo, etc.) in culture curriculum guidelines for Junior High Schools. It will be required for 7th, and 8th grade students because of the belief that "Martial arts lead to increased interest in the traditions and culture of Japan, aiding in the cultivation of civility with all peoples and the promotion of the normative consciousness". This announcement is (from the point of view of any student of Budo) very joyous indeed. The number of children interested in kendo has greatly increased over the past few years, and it is my wish to offer an outlet for that enthusiasm here at the Shi Ku Kai.

Our philosophy can be explained in the dojo’s understanding of the most basic exercise in Kendo: correct “men uchi” (a strike to the head). I teach students not to try “kote uchi” (a strike to the wrist which requires little risk), but to be brave and always try for men uchi. The reason for this extra hardship is simple: Men Uchi is the most difficult attack to land on an opponent. If a student can understand this purpose of always seeking the greatest heights in their own development, there will be no end to their personal growth.

The methodology we use in our lessons in this dojo is to practice basics (largely kirikaeshi and a mix of kihon techniques) continuously. It looks tedious, but the routine will improve children demonstrably. You can see the recognition of their improvement and their enjoyment on the faces of beginners.

However, mastering Shin (mental) Gi (Techunique) Tai (Strength) cannot be completed in a day. All dojo members, children and instructors alike, must practice discipline within and without the practice space. Patience is also required from parents as well. The reason for this commitment has its roots in the nature of all Budo: hard training builds character. As stated in the Concept of Kendo released by the All Japan Kendo Federation in 1975: “The purpose of kendo is “To discipline the human character through the application and the principles of the Katana.”

Through hard discipline, children will correct and master basic techniques, and eventually graduate from the Shi Ku Kai Dojo. When students encounter daunting challenges in training, they must wrestle fearlessly to overcome them. In our modern society, most anything can be obtained quickly and easily. From this overt convenience, the intrinsic value in most pursuits is cheapened. However, the value of what can be attained through Kendo can never degrade, and lasts forever within the hearts of its students. Hopefully, those same students who graduate from this dojo will indeed return when they have matured. I can tell you without doubt that these homecomings are my greatest pleasure.

Shi ku Kai is supported by Sensei (instructors), as well as volunteering parents under Iwanami Sensei’s supervision.

Young people usually do not hope for new heights these days. And a lot of people are simply satisfied with their current status. Everyone has his or her own way, and prize to achieve. I believe that someone who achieves their prize by exerting repeated effort does not only satisfy him/herself, but also leads those individuals who supported him or her to happiness. However, the process is not easy. It requires addressing a variety of problems and the difficulty will constantly throw you back. I believe the most important strength in overcoming these problems is: “STRONG WILL.” Learning, practicing new techniques, and cultivating a strong will drives you to achieve your prize.

Shi Ku Kai constantly pushes students to obtain this “Strong Will” in the pursuit of leading by example and displaying to society the values of kendo, through cooperative support from Sensei, parents, and student alike. Whether you are a child or an adult, teacher or a student, we hope you experience the wonderful pursuit of the traditions of Kendo along with us here at the Shi Ku Kai.
